EU5 Patch 1.4 'Rio Salado' Patch Notes: Everything New and What to Do First (Patch 1.4)

Updated October 29, 2026, from the official launch post. Paradox posted “Update 1.4 ‘Rio Salado’ is out now!” on Steam on October 28, 2026. That post is a launch feature summary, not a line-by-line changelog, and no separate forum changelog was found. The “What shipped” section below is taken from it. Everything still marked [PREVIEW] comes from pre-release Tinto Talks previews and is not confirmed by the launch post, especially specific numbers.
Europa Universalis V patch 1.4, “Rio Salado,” releases October 28, 2026, alongside the Across the Pillars Chronicle Pack ($19.99 / £16.99 / €19.99, also in the Premium Edition). It is the biggest single update the game has had since release, and the free patch alone reworks trade, diplomacy, Catholicism, pacing, and colonization. This page is the player version of the patch notes: what changed, what it means for your next campaign, and what to do in your first hour back.
What shipped — from the official October 28 launch post
Paradox’s October 28 launch post confirms the free 1.4 update ships: 315 new Advances for Iberian/Maghrebi tags and cultures; new events, decisions, and unique buildings for Aragon, Castile, Granada, Navarre, Mallorca, Tunis, Tlemcen, and more; new holy sites and monuments; full Jewish and Sephardi flavor; Expeditions (leader plus gold, fixed routes, free-path, and global races); Cardinals as full characters with a subpanel and map mode; two-phase Crusades/Jihads with a preparation period, leadership roles, a shared war chest, and new actions/events; Religious Orders with callings and crown actions; Tariffs/Subventions; more customizable Trade Orders; Canals with access control; Default on Creditors; area-based Promote Industry; Inheritance Contracts; Betrothals; the Political Influence resource; Republic/Theocracy crisis events (Oligarchic Capture, Crisis of Faith); offer/demand War Leadership; estate private armies pressable into royal service; a cavalry/infantry balance adjustment; Colonial Charters (new nation, expand, or integrate); migration tools; colonization UI health indicators and milestones; Laws panel, Road Builder, and Peace Treaty UX passes; Budget and Building Queue tools; much smaller save files; Mod Manager improvements; and mid/late-game performance boosts.
What the launch post does not state, so this page does not claim them as launch-confirmed: daily-tick/speed 5-max specifics, a Political Influence 0–100 scale or +20% Crown Power figure, or a cavalry 4 to 3.25 change. Those remain [PREVIEW] in the sections below.
The 5 biggest changes in 30 seconds
- Trade becomes a tool you steer, not a number you watch. Trade Orders become a priority queue with an involvement ladder from full automation to full manual control. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes]
- Expeditions send characters into the unknown. New character-led missions to distant lands, including the Circumnavigation and Treasure Fleet expeditions. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes]
- Dynasties get real tools. Betrothals for children age 2+, inheritance contracts to buy the right to inherit heirless monarchies, and Demand/Offer War Leadership actions. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes]
- The game ticks daily, not hourly, and speed 5 is the max. Speeds 6 and 7 are gone; Paradox reports roughly 10–15% faster performance from the tick change alone. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes; daily tick itself confirmed by the Oct 26 Steam post]
- Catholicism is physical now. Cardinals become named characters, Crusades and Jihads get defined leaders and stakes, and Religious Orders sit in actual provinces. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes]
Expeditions: first look
Expeditions are character-led missions to distant lands — the update’s headline exploration system. Confirmed examples from the diaries: Circumnavigation (race around the world), Treasure Fleet (Middle Kingdom exclusive), Great Pilgrimage, and Royal Hajj. Across the Pillars adds eight Golden Cities expeditions plus Castilian Treasure Fleets once America is discovered. Two launch achievements are expedition-gated: The Road to El Dorado (discover El Dorado with an expedition) and There and Back Again (complete the Circumnavigation expedition). [PREVIEW — verify against final notes; achievement names confirmed from Tinto Talks 129 via Steam, Oct 21]
Economy: trade orders, tariffs, Promote Industry
Trade Orders become a priority queue: orders higher in the list get Trade Capacity first, leftovers trickle down, and unserved orders wait as fallbacks instead of needing re-enabling. Each order takes a flat amount of capacity or a percentage of the market’s total, with editable parameters including minimum acceptable profit, target markets, and a Profit, Food, or shortage-fixing focus. Market Owners can levy Tariffs on foreign trade inside their own markets, or negative-tariff Subventions to encourage it. Promote Industry specializes production at area level, with slots scaling by rank, and nine early specialization Urban Rights plus two market-focused rights arrive with it. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes; the diary flagged tariff/rights values as not final]
For the full economy picture, see the 1.4 economy and trade guide and the beginner’s trade guide.
Politics and diplomacy: Political Influence, war leadership, betrothals, inheritance contracts
Political Influence is a new 0–100 country currency, and high values raise base Crown Power by up to 20%. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes] Diplomacy gains Demand/Offer War Leadership, betrothals (marriage promises for children age 2+), and inheritance contracts (buying inheritance rights to heirless monarchies, preview cost roughly 50–1500 gold scaled by development). Hegemony antagonism flattens to +10% with +1 diplomatic reputation per hegemony, the diplomat cap rises from 1 to 3, and automation is restricted: no automation for religion/culture/succession changes, wars, alliances, or international organizations, and automation no longer cancels player-started actions. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes]
See the diplomacy guide for how these fit the existing alliance/rivalry game.
Catholicism and culture changes
Cardinals become named characters rather than a building; Crusades and Jihads are reworked with defined leaders and stakes; Religious Orders are placed physically in provinces, with Iberian/Maghrebi actions including Bula de Cruzada, Iberian Military Orders, Cabalgada, and Parias. On culture, the old Discriminated tier is renamed Ignored, and a new lower tier takes the Discriminated name with active-oppression effects (faster assimilation, lower pop satisfaction, more emigration, diplomatic dislike). [PREVIEW — verify against final notes]
Combat, mercenaries, pacing: daily tick and speed 5
Combat numbers shift: cavalry power 4 to 3.25, flanking bonus cut to +60% for both light and heavy cavalry, Napoleonic Warfare reworked to +5% discipline instead of ignoring zones of control, artillery needing 2 regiments per siege bonus point instead of 3, and forts auto-surrendering below 5% garrison strength instead of below 10 defenders. Mercenaries cost roughly twice as much upfront, +35% monthly upkeep, +50% food in the field, with a 25% hostile-territory surcharge on rival soil, plus a new Mercenary Market law in the Age of Renaissance. Pacing: hourly ticks are gone (daily tick, like EU4), speeds 6–7 removed, complacency removed entirely, and estates above 25% power drain legitimacy or its equivalent. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes; daily tick confirmed by the Oct 26 Steam post]
What to do in your first hour back
- Open the new Content Tab and read your Decisions — many old random events are now clickable actions with visible progress bars. [PREVIEW — verify against final notes]
- Set your Trade Orders involvement level before you unpause: full automation still works, but the priority queue is where the money is if you trade at all.
- Check your diplomat count (cap is now 3) and reassign idle diplomats — diplomacy automation rules changed, so old auto-settings may not do what you expect.
- If you play Iberia or the Maghreb, open the Battle of the Strait situation first — it is the DLC’s spine, and its axes (Influence over Granada, Granadan Sovereignty) drive the Golden Century that follows.
- Start a fresh campaign before judging balance: pacing, food-surplus pop growth, and economy numbers all moved at once, and old-campaign comparisons will mislead you. Paradox recommends a new save for 1.4 even though 1.3 saves technically load.
FAQ
Is 1.4 free? Yes — “Rio Salado” is a free update for all EU5 owners. Across the Pillars is the separate paid Chronicle Pack ($19.99 / £16.99 / €19.99).
What is free vs paid? Free in 1.4: Expeditions, Decisions/Content Tab, Religious Orders, the trade facelift, daily tick, Political Influence, Betrothals, Inheritance Contracts. Paid (Across the Pillars): Battle of the Strait and Golden Century situations, Iberian Union, Golden Cities expeditions, Iberian Military Orders, unit/music art. [PREVIEW — verify the split against final notes]
Is my old save compatible? On a technical level, yes: Paradox says a 1.3 save will load just fine into 1.4. On a gameplay/balance level, no: issues are very likely, and possibly unrecoverable, so Paradox highly recommends starting a new save with 1.4. Saves from the 1.4 Beta are fully compatible with 1.4 live.
Are Ambitions in 1.4? No. Ambitions moved to a future “Discovery” update, currently targeted for late 2027, with a colonization rework.
Where do I start if I only have an hour? The 1.4 hub tracks everything confirmed, and the naval warfare guide is already Patch 1.4 current — navy, loans, and subjects guides need no 1.4 changes.
